Womens rainboots are useful, fun and for some reason - fashionable. However, their purpose is to protect dry feet from becoming wet in the rain. Traditionally, rainboots are used by those that spend a lot of time outdoors - farm workers, those that work around horses, gardening enthusiasts. Whatever you need a rain boot for, the following selection is bound to peak your interest.

Womens Rainboots

All womens rainboots are, above anything else, practical. They were designed for a specific purpose and to that end - they deliver. They're waterproof, hardwearing and most of all handy to have behind the door.

Originally, they appeared around two centuries ago. They were birthed in England no less, by one Arthur Wellesley. Officially he was the First Duke of Wellington. That’s the reason why they’re also known as womens wellies – not just rainboots.

And so – Arthur enjoyed wearing hessian boots, a knee high, tasselled boot that originally came from the Hessians. For whatever reason, Arthur chose to direct his shoemaker to recreate the boots, minus the tassels.

He also insisted that they were designed to be more streamlined for the foot and leg – hence the Wellington Boot, or rainboot, was invented. Some years later, around the mid-nineteenth century, rubber was finally invented.

Today we wear the modern day version, honed in some ways, not in others. What will be a certainty is the fact that the Duke of Wellington probably didn’t wear a leopard print version. Or one’s covered in polka dots.

Waterproof Rain Boots

All waterproof rain boots are made from rubber. That’s what makes them watertight.

However, some have different functions and traditionally, certain brands are used in specific environments.

As an example, Hunters tend to be worn by those that work with horses. I’ve owned a few pair of these in the past and though they’re not the cheapest of rainboots, they’re hardwearing and hardworking.

Another brand worn by equine folks are Bogs. They’re part rubber, part neoprene. The neoprene makes for a very warm boot and to be honest, you don’t need to work with horses to wear them.

I’ve owned the British equivalent for around eight years. They’re fantastically warm, with or without socks, waterproof and supremely comfortable.

I’d recommend the Bogs (and similar neoprene rainboots) to anyone that prefers a good deal of warmth from their wellies.

They’re just as easy to clean and care for as a standard rubber rainboot and if anything, more robust. And they really are extremely comfy to wear.

They’re also non-slip and the internal lining wicks moisture away – meaning no smelly feet!

Womens Fashion Rainboots

There is such a thing as womens fashion rainboots. In fact, over the last couple of years or so, it’s become de rigueur to wear rainboots simply as a fashion statement.

More and more bright, rubber clad lower legs and feet have been seen striding around the highways and byways in loud, attention grabbing wellies than ever before.

The current best seller is the dav Womens Victoria Paisley Rainboot. They come in either a blue paisley over black, or a full brown paisley design.

A close second is the mock cowboy styled Nomad Womens Yippy Rainboot. If you love all things western, this may be the perfect waterproof footwear for you. Sorry - I meant y'all!

Third in line is the Chooka Womens Vintage Rain Boot that’s  covered in tattoo type designs over black rubber. In fact Chooka do a great range of fashion wellies and they’re all worth checking out, if you’re considering buying a new pair of stylish rainboots.

There are others brands, just as hip and stylish, if you think of wellies as being a fashion accessory. Most if not all are patterned, some louder than others.

I especially like the Ed Hardy Seattle Tattoo Womens Rubber Rain Boot. The design is gorgeous yet fun and the double edged string closure – complete with over long laces that hang down the boot leg – is practical with a twist.

In all, there’s plenty of choice, some great designs and surely something will appeal to the discerning wearer of womens fashion rainboots.

Rain Shoes

As the name suggest, rain shoes are the non-boot version of womens rainboots. Not all are particularly stylish but they are all practical.

Some are quite plain and functional looking, whilst others, such as the best selling Bogs Womens Rain Bootee are somewhere between the two.

The Sperry Top-Sider Womens Pelican Slip On is getting closer to looking a little less like a pair of rain shoes, and more like a chic, yet functional shoe, with its preppy-look pattern and semi-loafer styling.

Superior Boot Co. have thrown their hat into the ring and turned up with some styles that are, to my mind, more reminiscent of a horse-yard muck type boot but the main thing is they’re a practical waterproof shoe.

Whatever your tastes, there’s a few different styles to choose from. Though when it comes to some serious puddle jumping - I think that your feet are more likely to remain dry with a pair of womens rainboots than a pair of rain shoes.

But that’s just me, thinking out loud.

It's finally stopped raining and snowing in New England, but my garden is still a sea of mud, so I'm living in my boots these days as a start my Spring Garden Clean Up.

Good to know the rain's stopped. That's all it seems to do in the UK, year round. Which is why rainboots are very very handy!
